Is Laser Hair Removal Safe for Dark Skin? What Vancouver Clients Should Know
“Will this even work on my skin tone?” is one of the most common questions we hear before a first laser hair removal appointment — and it’s a fair one. Older laser technology genuinely struggled with darker skin, and some clinics still can’t safely treat every skin tone. Here’s what actually matters, and what our own clients with darker skin tones have said about their results.
Why skin tone matters for laser hair removal
Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin — the pigment that gives hair its colour — inside the hair follicle. The laser’s light is absorbed by that pigment and converted to heat, which disables the follicle. The complication is that melanin is also what gives skin its colour. On darker skin, a laser tuned for hair pigment can also be absorbed by the skin’s own melanin, which is where the risk of burns or discolouration comes from with the wrong equipment or settings.
Not all lasers are equal
This is where the type of laser makes a real difference. We use the Cynosure Elite+ platform, which combines two wavelengths in one machine:
- 755 nm Alexandrite — commonly used for lighter skin tones
- 1064 nm Nd:YAG — the longer wavelength passes more efficiently through the upper layers of skin, making it the wavelength typically used for darker skin tones, where it targets the hair follicle while reducing interaction with melanin in the skin itself
Having both on one platform means your technician isn’t stuck using one setting for every client — treatment is customized to your specific skin tone and hair type, rather than a one-size-fits-all setting that only really works for one end of the skin tone range.
What our clients with darker skin tones actually say
“Best laser service I have and would ever do. My skin responded so well to the treatment and I could not believe it. I would 20/10 recommend this place to anyone who is dark skinned looking for laser removal, regardless of how stubborn the hair is.”
— Angel Abba, Google review
“I was nervous at first because I wasn’t sure they could successfully remove my hair since I have dark skin, but instead they did an excellent job removing my hair. I highly recommend anyone with dark skin to go to Electra Laser.”
— Lelice Derese, Google review

What to expect at your consultation
Every new client gets a complimentary consultation and a test patch before any treatment is booked — no exceptions, regardless of skin tone. Your technician assesses your skin and hair, explains the process, and performs a small test patch on the area you want treated. If your skin responds the way it should, treatment can begin at least 24 hours later. This step exists specifically to catch anyone whose skin or hair characteristics need a different approach before a full treatment ever happens.
Getting the best results, whatever your skin tone
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning (including self-tanner) before your appointment and between sessions — a tan temporarily adds melanin to the skin itself, which affects how safely and effectively any laser can be used
- Shave, don’t wax, tweeze or thread between sessions — the follicle needs to stay intact for the laser to target it
- Stick to your recommended schedule — most clients need 6–10 treatments spaced 4–8 weeks apart, since hair only responds to treatment during its active growth phase
- Tell your technician about any medications, skin conditions, or past reactions to sun or laser treatments — this is standard for every client and helps them set your treatment up correctly from day one
