IPL Photofacial FAQ

1. How does IPL Photofacial work?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-laser therapy that involves shining highly concentrated and intense beams of light intermittently on the surface of the skin. Photo refers to the beam of light, and facial refers to the face and/or neck region. The pulses of light target pigment and vascular irregularities, smoothing out the skin’s tone and texture.

IPL therapy helps to reduce the effects of aging, leaving clients with younger, clearer, and healthier-looking skin. It is not to be confused with laser therapy. Whereas laser therapy uses one particular wavelength of light, IPL therapy produces a spectrum of light.

2. Is an IPL Photofacial safe?

Yes, it is. When performed correctly by a certified, experienced technician, IPL Photofacial therapy is both safe and effective.

As a professional skin-care clinic, we will not perform any procedures without first assessing: your complete medical history; your current health condition; and any potential you may have for complications. Additionally, we provide all clients with protective eyewear that must be worn during treatment.

3. What type of training do your technicians undergo?

Our technicians at Electra Laser are certified medical estheticians. While B.C. has no regulations in place governing technicians who work in skin-care clinics, we require our technicians to be fully trained and certified. All of our technicians have a minimum of two years’ experience.

4. Which type of equipment does Electra Laser use?

At Electra Laser, we use only medical-grade, CSA-approved equipment. For IPL Photofacial treatments, we use the Syneron elos Plus platform, which is considered to be leading-edge technology and the only IPL that combines light and radio frequency energies for a more effective treatment. All of our equipment is maintained and repaired by professional service technicians who have been certified by the equipment manufacturer.

5. Am I required to book a consultation prior to being treated?

Yes, we will book a complimentary consultation appointment for you with one of our certified technicians prior to scheduling any skin-rejuvenation treatment. This is for your own protection, and we cannot make exceptions. At this time, you should also share with us any past experience you have had with skin rejuvenation and/or laser skin treatments.

During your consultation, we will perform a test patch on your skin to check for any adverse reactions. You are responsible for informing your technician of any medications or natural health products you are taking; and of any underlying medical conditions you have. These are critical details that we must consider when customizing your skin rejuvenation treatments.

We encourage you to ask all of your questions during your consultation so that we can address your concerns prior to beginning your treatment. It is important to us that: you are well informed before you begin IPL Photofacial treatments and; you feel comfortable with our clinic and your technician.

6. Is IPL Photofacial treatment painful?

Most clients liken IPL to the gentle snap of an elastic band against the skin. Others experience it as a very short pinprick. While no anesthetic is required, we do cool the skin, which helps to minimize any discomfort.

7. What are the benefits of IPL Photofacial treatment?

IPL Photofacial treatments require no anesthetic and they involve little or no downtime. As few as one or two treatments can reduce spots, smooth uneven pigmentation, help repair broken facial capillaries and veins, and reduce the redness associated with rosacea. Additional treatments will continue to improve tone, texture, and stimulate the dermis to produce more collagen.

8. What are the possible side effects of IPL Photofacial treatment?

By definition, IPL therapy involves short, intense pulses of light being delivered to the skin. As a result, you may experience small raised bumps and redness in the treatment area shortly after your treatment. This will subside in a few days and is no cause for alarm.

9. How long is a typical treatment?

A typical treatment can last anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. Because there is little or no downtime, you can have an IPL Photofacial during your lunch break.

10. How many treatments will I need?

The ideal number of treatments will depend upon your skin and the issues you wish to address. We usually book a series of five treatments for you to achieve optimum results.
